There are 3 different types of assessments:
1. Entry Level Assessment: Assess knowledge at the beginning of the unit
- What do I already know?
2. Formative Assessment: Check learning throughout the lesson to ensure we are heading in the right direction
- What have I learned so far?
3. Summative Assessment: At the end of the unit, assess what has been learned through a summary activity
- What have I learned?
- What do I already know?
2. Formative Assessment: Check learning throughout the lesson to ensure we are heading in the right direction
- What have I learned so far?
3. Summative Assessment: At the end of the unit, assess what has been learned through a summary activity
- What have I learned?
- The entry level assessment I will conduct is in the form of a class discussion. Students will read the article "Victorian Literature" prior to coming to class and we will discuss what they already know and have just learned about the Victorian era and its literature. Based on this discussion, I will know if further prior knowledge is needed or if we have a good foundation on which to build this unit.
- During the unit, there will be four formative assessments to check if we are on the right path. The first formative assessment will be the class discussion we have during our lesson "Symbolism in The Awakening." The critical thinking questions in this lesson will assess whether or not students understand how symbols are important to literature and what the symbols in the novel represent. Next, that night's homework will be the second formative assessment activity: an entry in their personal blogs. Students will answer a critical thinking question online and comment on three of their fellow classmates' answers. The third formative assessment is a concept map that students will create individually online to demonstrate their understanding of Edna's character development and the relationships the characters have with each other. Lastly, students will take a quiz online to assess how well they understand the events of the novel.
- To close out the unit, students will participate in two summative assessment activities. The first is a reflection in which students write an entry on their personal blog describing what they learned about the novel (symbolism, character development, overall opinions, etc.) and the "Big Ideas." Students will then comment on the entries of at least three classmates. For the second summative activity, students will write a 4-5 page paper on either symbolism, character development, or one of the "Big Ideas."
